ESL & GED CLASSES

ADULT EDUCATION

➤  English As A Second Language

York Tec Centro believes that the foundation to better employment starts with clear and professional communication. Our ESL classes empower language learners to develop their English language skills in a motivated and culturally-appropriate way. Each class is customized to fit the needs of students at various proficiency levels – basic, intermediate, or advanced.

➤  ESL Levels Provided

The beginner class focuses on accumulating vocabulary and teaching basic grammar concepts. Students are taught names for simple parts of speech which they practice through reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a real-life context. One of the top priorities in language learning is memorizing vocabulary. In this class, you will be given vocabulary of familiar settings to build confidence and increase practice time.

The high beginner class teaches grammar concepts for the purpose of perfecting an ELL’s (English Language Learner) speaking ability. Students will gain clarity in their speech—learning the difference between formal English and conversational English.

The intermediate class is for the student who successfully completed the high beginner ESL class and has a CASAS score of at least 205. This class focuses on helping students better express themselves through speaking and writing in English. Additionally, part of each class is devoted to reading in English and comprehension from oral presentations, and literary informational text through level-appropriate listening, reading, and observing.

The transition or advanced class prepares students for occupational skills training classes. Entrance to an occupation skills training class requires students to demonstrate English language proficiency equivalent to a specific grade reading level as measured by the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE test). To help students reach the prerequisite reading level, the “Reading in English” class utilizes relatable reading assignments such as biographies, fiction, magazines, the daily newspaper, and the Endeavor Reading series for adult learners. Students must demonstrate a good command of standard English through advanced speaking, listening, reading, and writing exercises.

HISET PREP COURSES

➤  High School Equivalence Course In Spanish

This program is designed for adults who are reading below the ninth-grade level. In addition to basic skills like reading and writing, these programs generally help students gain vocational skills such as those needed for some of the programs offered at York Tec Centro.

HISET prep classes help adults earn a high school equivalency diploma by passing the HISET test. These classes allow adults to get more practice in subjects they may be weak in before taking the test. The HISET test measures knowledge in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science. The course utilizes online resources (HISET preparation materials) as well as traditional textbooks and electronic assignments.
